Directed by Patrick Hughes (The Expendables 3), the film is classic summer popcorn fun. From the trailers, you can instantly realize the route the filmmakers were going for with The Hitman’s Bodyguard. The movie’s premise was to deliver action packed sequences infused with genuinely funny moments; and it accomplishes just that.

The weight of the film is carried on the main duo’s shoulders: Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. They make somewhat of an odd pairing, but the way their distinct personalities clash and the interactions that result from their differences produce contagious laughs across the theater. Ryan plays Michael Bryce, a triple A rated bodyguard, who appreciates having time for careful planning. On the other hand, Sam Jackson is Darrius Kincaid, the world’s deadliest hitman who prefers careless improvisation over cautious preparation. Nothing can go wrong, right? It depends who you ask. If you ask Gary Oldman, he might be on the negative side. He plays a political dictator, called Dukhovich, a menacing figure of power. Just another villain to add to Oldman’s vast rogues’ gallery. Also worthy of note is Elodie Yung, who here has a different type of role (I had just seen her in Defenders the other day) and she sells it well.

Narratively speaking, the story is not that thought provocative or that complex; it is actually pretty tight and streamlined, although managing to squeeze in a couple of stimulating backstory scenes, in the form of flashbacks. As I previously mentioned, it is centered on the banter between Jackson and Reynolds; the chemistry is there and their on screen presence and quips undeniably elevate the material. The action was fast and brutal, thanks to its R rating, and it felt more like a series of obstacle courses for our main characters to overcome. But they were engaging and thrilling, nevertheless.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard is a vibrant action flick, always committed to its gleeful attitude, making the actors’ charisma pop out of the screen. Great movie to see with a group of people; authentic moments of fun guaranteed.
